Exactly how many calories are in that double cheeseburger or those fries? Some say we should know the calorie count so we can make healthy choices.
But how we get that information has led to an all out war between fast food restaurants and the City of New York.

Eyewitness News reporter Nina Pineda has the story.

Walk into any of the 60 Wendy’s restaurants in New York City and you won’t be able to see how many calories are in the bacon double cheeseburger, the chili and fries or even the healthy Mandarin chicken salad. Read more

Spider bite could replace Viagra

A Brazilian spider delivers more than a painful bite that sends most victims to the hospital. Its venom stimulates an hours-long erection. Now scientists have figured out the chemical that seems to be responsible for the penis boost.

In Brazil, emergency room staff can immediately spot the victims of a bite from the Brazilian wandering spider (Phoneutria nigriventer). Patients not only experience overall pain and an increase in blood pressure, they also sport an uncomfortable erection. Read more

Teenagers as young as 14 are using cannabis every day, according to a study by Queen’s University Belfast.

The researchers found about one in 10 cannabis-smoking teenagers they surveyed were using the drug daily.

Dr Patrick McCrystal said cannabis use at a young age could lead to mental illness and other problems.

New York – Being stressed out at work can make you fat, a new study suggests.

The more job strain men and women reported, the more likely they were to become obese, Dr Eric J Brunner of the Royal Free and University College London Medical School and colleagues found.

Higher stress levels were also tied to excess fat around the middle, which is particularly harmful for health. Read more

What Really Is In A McDonald’s Chicken McNugget?

These two paragraphs are taken directly from The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals:

“The ingredients listed in the flyer suggest a lot of thought goes into a nugget, that and a lot of corn. Of the thirty-eight ingredients it takes to make a McNugget, I counted thirteen that can be derived from corn: the corn-fed chicken itself; modified cornstarch (to bind the pulverized chicken meat); mono-, tri-, and diglycerides (emulsifiers, which keep the fats and water from separating); dextrose; lecithin (another emulsifier); chicken broth (to restore some of the flavor that processing leeches out); yellow corn flour and more modified cornstarch (for the batter); cornstarch (a filler); vegetable shortening; partially hydrogenated corn oil; and citric acid as a preservative. A couple of other plants take part in the nugget: There’s some wheat in the batter, and on any given day the hydrogenated oil could come from soybeans, canola, or cotton rather than corn, depending on the market price and availability. Women Settle for Mediocre Sex, Scientist Finds

Women have high expectations for nearly every area of their lives, but when it comes to sex, they settle for less.

And most women keep their dissatisfaction with sex a secret, leaving their partners (let alone their doctors) in the dark, said Anita Clayton, a psychiatrist who focuses on women’s sexuality at the University of Virginia Health System.

“Whereas men, if they have trouble with sex, it’s a crisis. They run to the doctor and say ‘I need something for this.’ Women don’t do that. They just sort of stuff it down and push it further down on the list,” Clayton said.

With surveys and years of clinical experience, Clayton has compiled a vast collection of data on women’s sex lives. Often, she said, a female patient would visit her with issues like marital problems or depression, and only when directly asked about sex, the patient would divulge dissatisfaction. Read more

Female orgasms are potentially a deadly shocker for men

If I’m ever reincarnated, I want to be a woman next time around,” my 56-year-old (male) friend from my high school days blurted out to me one day after we’d met up for the first time in a while.

“Why?” I asked.

“Because when the sex is good, it’s so much better than it is for guys,” he said, then added: “Tell me why.”

I was a bit perplexed. “I’ve never been a woman, so how would I know. Some women have faked orgasm, so it’s a bit intrusive for a guy to stand there and talk about what a woman’s orgasms should be like.”

He shot back. “I’m not asking you to speak from personal experience. Tell me from the point of view of somebody who’s been studying Japanese sexuality for 30 years.” Read more

Yin, Yang And Yawn

Claim: The drug clomipramine has been known to cause orgasms in yawning patients.

Status: True.

Origins: This 1995 article quite nicely sums up the issue of clomipramine, an anti-depressant drug, having the side effects of causing some of its users to experience orgasms when they yawn:
Some people prescribed an anti-depressant drug have found an unexpected side effect: they have an orgasm when they yawn. The drug clomipramine usually elevates mood and boosts physical activity and appetite. However, the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry reports four patients on the drug had orgasms on I’m soooo tired yawning.

“There is a small subset of people who are affected this way,” commented Dr. Martin Godfrey, a London GP who has prescribed the drug. “I understand they find this side effect quite pleasant.” Read more
