Zooming through low-Earth orbit at 17,500 mph, Suni Williams completes the standard marathon distance every 5.4 seconds. Good thing Rosie Ruiz never thought of that.
Williams is registered for next month’s Boston Marathon, even though she’ll be stuck on the international space station when the rest of the field lines up for the 111th edition of the race. So the U.S. Navy commander will run the equivalent distance on a treadmill — 210 miles above Earth, and tethered to her track by bungee cords so she doesn’t float away. Read more

Actor Alec Baldwin was so moved by the story of an 18-year-old Army soldier who is scheduled to serve in Iraq, he’s going to help pay for her college education after she leaves the military.
Baldwin was so moved by a March 4 New York Times story about Pvt. Resha Kane’s last day with family and friends before going for training to prepare for serving in Iraq that he — not his people — tracked down Kane’s mother at a discount store where she works to offer his assistance, his spokesman said. HOUSTON — A woman faked a seizure to avoid being arrested after a chase, officials told KPRC Local 2.
Houston police said an officer spotted a pickup truck at a gasoline station on Werner Street near Witcher Lane at about 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Mother and Daughter Killed by Elephant

Two British tourists died when an elephant charged them in western Zimbabwe, the British Embassy in Harare said Monday. A third injured Briton was hospitalized with serious injuries.
Zimbabwe authorities declined to identify the tourists until their family was notified, but said the dead were a mother and daughter. They said the injured Briton was the husband and father of the two who died.
The family was on a walking safari in the Hwange National Park on Saturday and was accompanied by a guide and a professional hunter. Read more

PULLMAN, Washington (AP) — A man was charged with theft and burglary after police said they found 93 pounds of women’s panties, brassieres and other underwear at his home.
Investigators believe Garth M. Flaherty, 24, took as many as 1,500 undergarments from apartment complex laundry rooms before he was caught, police Cmdr. Chris Tennant said. Read more

A drunken woman can still consent to sex, the Court of Appeal ruled yesterday.
Three senior judges were giving reasons for clearing a 25-year-old man of raping a student, aged 19, after both had been drinking heavily.
Sir Igor Judge, sitting with Lady Justice Hallett and Mrs Justice Gloster, said sex would amount to rape if the complainant had lost her capacity to choose as a result of drink. Read more

A teenager was killed by a hit-and-run driver at the same spot where his 14-year-old friend had died in a car crash just hours earlier.
Andrew Coit, 18, was hit by a car after 4 a.m. Saturday as he played a guitar at a makeshift memorial to Darien Plass, 14, on West Warwick’s Main Street. Plass died after driving his mother’s minivan into a utility pole late Friday, friends of both teenagers told the Providence Journal. Read more

New York – Being stressed out at work can make you fat, a new study suggests.
The more job strain men and women reported, the more likely they were to become obese, Dr Eric J Brunner of the Royal Free and University College London Medical School and colleagues found.
Higher stress levels were also tied to excess fat around the middle, which is particularly harmful for health. Read more
