(CBS) Allison Stokke is one of the top high school pole vaulters in America.

The California state champion has broken five national records.

But in cyberspace, people think of the 18-year-old from Norwalk very differently, because of one misleading photo.

The shot, explains Early Show co-anchor Hannah Storm, was taken at a track meet and posted on a sports blog. It’s made Stokke the latest Internet “it” girl.

In less than a month, a virtual slideshow of still photos has taken her image around the world. Read more

Damien Hirst covers skull cast in diamonds

Damien Hirst, former BritArt bad boy whose works infuriate and inspire in equal measure, did it again on Friday with a diamond-encrusted platinum cast of a human skull priced at a cool $99020000.

The skull, cast from a 35-year-old 18th century European male, is coated with 8,601 diamonds, including a large pink diamond worth more than four million pounds in the centre of its forehead.

“It shows we are not going to live for ever. But it also has a feeling of victory over death,” Hirst said as the sparkling skull was unveiled to the public for the first time amid tight security at central London’s White Cube gallery. Read more

A 71-year-old man from Japan has reportedly become the oldest person to climb to the summit of Mount Everest.

Retired teacher Katsusuke Yanagisawa scaled the 8,850m (29,035ft) Himalayan peak, breaking the record set by a 70-year-old Japanese man in May 2006.

“I was pretty much at ease mentally at the summit, like I could sing a song,” he told a Japanese TV station.

Mr Yanagisawa said he climbed the Tibetan side of the peak with a team including New Zealanders and Japanese. Read more

Chicago cop arrested for alleged beating

A police officer has been arrested in the off-duty beating of a 15-year-old high school student, the Chicago Police Department said Sunday.

The officer, who was assigned to the department’s mass transit unit, was arrested on Saturday, four days after the Juarez High School student suffered a broken jaw and other injuries in the attack, according to a police statement. The officer’s name was not released.

HOUSTON, Texas (AP) — The space shuttle pilot at the center of a bizarre love triangle that included a former astronaut who now faces attempted kidnapping charges is leaving the space agency, NASA said Friday.

Cmdr. Bill Oefelein will leave NASA on June 1, nearly four months after authorities believe his cooled relationship with Lisa Nowak led her to drive 900 miles from Houston to Florida and confront her romantic rival.

NASA requested a reassignment, and the Navy agreed, said Navy spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Doug Gabos. Read more

$24M Of Marijuana Plants Eradicated In Bay Area Bust

Deputies and narcotics task force members eradicated 16,000 marijuana plants with an estimated street value of $24 million Friday morning, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department.

Sgt. Chris Bertoli said narcotics task force agents conducted aerial surveillance on an area five miles up Geysers Road in the Healdsburg area and observed four large grow sites concealed in the brush. Read more

Billionaire to buy Boeing 787 jet

Boeing Co. (NYSE:BA - news) said on Tuesday it received an order for a private 787 airplane from Hong Kong real estate tycoon Joseph Lau.

The order for Boeing’s new carbon-composite 787-8 model, which would seat up to 250 people if configured as a normal airliner, is valued at $153 million at list prices, the planemaker said.

In all, Boeing said it now has seven orders for private 787s, or “787 VIPs” as it calls them. It is pitching this mega-business jet at wealthy entrepreneurs, especially in Asia, where business people tend to travel longer distances. Read more
